About Jarmos Clocks About why now
- Clocks have always fascinated me.
- My first clock was built using a Meccano set.
- In the 1970's, in high school I designed and built a digital clock using TTL integrated circuits.
- Now I will bring more clocks to life.
My DIGITAL CLOCK from 1976
I made the case in woodworking shop out of mahogany. The circuit boards, with the exception of the front display board, were made using hand drawn etch resist ink on the copper PCB.
The drilling of the 14 and 16 pin dual-in-line pins using a #60 drill bit using a hand drill was frustrating at times, but in the end I succeeded.
The clock used state-of-the-art TTL chips, which had be just become commercially available at reasonable cost a few years earlier.
It had 3 PCB's and used 40+ TTL DIPS
The time-base was the 60Hz grid frequency.
The 7447 BCD-to-seven-segment decoder chips were VERY expensive, so I designed a 7447 multiplexer circuit using a FLIP-FLOP and tons of AND and OR gates.
I crammed the transformer into a wooden cubby hole to make the clock case smaller.
Lucky thing the power draw is so small that the transformer doesn't get too hot.
